About book L'amico Americano (1974)

This is a stunning book, and (for a change) an equally stunning movie. Ripley is chilling in his attitudes to those around him, and yet one has a curious empathy with him. It's fascinating to read; the explosive moments of violence, mixed with quiet moments of introspection. It's as though he has two characters. This is such an understated story, and so well told. And I've only just realised from checking on GR that there are a lot more Ripley stories to read. How wonderful! That's my weekend gone. I absolutely loved book one in this series "The Talented Mr. Ripley", so I decided to read all 5 books. I knocked a star off book #2 (perhaps I should have given it only 3 stars) due to the silly and inane explanation for Mr. Ripley 's shenanigans. Come on Highsmith, a double suicide and cremation!? Please!? Well I am extremely pleased that book #3 returns to Highsmith at her best. I dare say that this book was even more entertaining than the first installment. Bravo! Of course, if she got only the odd numbered books "right" then I have to endure another "piece de incredulity" before the final "piece de resistance".
