An earlier Jack Swyteck novel, Last To Die has an interesting premise. Having lost her daughter to an intruder some years before Sally Fenning has remarried and then divorced a wealthy French businessman who, among other things, is involved in the cocoa business in the Ivory Coast using child slave labour to enhance his profits. After only 18 months married to him, Sally gets a sizeable divorce settlement which has now grown to $46 million. For reasons which don't become clear until late in the novel Sally decides to hire a hit man to kill her. And she is killed. Jack Swytek becomes involved when he is asked to represent Tatum, criminal brother of Theo whom he had rescued from death row some years before. Tatum informs Jack that he was approached by Sally about killing her but turned the job down. Then Jack and Tatum are invited to a lawyer's office re Sally's will. Sally has named six heirs, none of whom are family and one of whom is Tatum. The wrinkle is that only the last surviving of the six named will inherit the money. Then the games begin as there are attempts to scare some out of the running and the killing begins. There is an interesting twist at the very end which helps make sense of the whole shebang. Not Grippando's best novel but an interesting read nonetheless.

Do You like book Last To Die (2004)?

The third book in the Jack Swyteck series is a strong entrant. It's got greed, deception, mystery, stalking, and a character haunted by their tragic past. The tortured character is a woman whose daughter was murdered, unable to stand life anymore she attempts to hire a contract killer to murder her however she is turned down, only to still turn up dead two weeks later. At the reading of her will six people who made her life difficult are named in her will, all beneficiaries to 46 million dollars... if they are the last one alive.Enter dead bodies and subterfuge.Overall a well paced legal thriller/murder mystery that was not at all predictable and an easy pleasurable read.

Loved it. Great story, great murder mystery, set in Florida in places I know.A young Sally Fenning is murdered and leaves her millions to several folks.....but only to the one that survives. Obviously, they were not Sally's friends, so as one is bumped off after the other, who is the killer? Who killed her child, why was her child killed.Love, mystery and friendship as criminal defense lawyer Jack Swytek trys to solve the mystery, and in doing so, becomes the target! Actually, this was on the book tape, and read by Ken Howard...great to listen to while ironing! Get lots ironed!!!!

The best part of this thriller was the plot; a beatiful young woman was found shot dead in her Mercedes...it seemed she had moved on from her struggling waitress days when she was brutally attacked and her young daughter killed in their own home. Having divorced and then remarried a wealthy foreign man, she left a will distributing $48 million--but the potential heirs (including a hired killer, her ex-husband, a newspaper reporter) start dying off.The payoff (to the story!)was feasible and a little shocking. A good entertainment read but, like a rich dessert, will soon become another on the long list of thrillers and mysteries I have read.
