About book Lawrence In Arabia: War, Deceit, Imperial Folly And The Making Of The Modern Middle East (2013)

You can learn a lot by reading this book. That being said, although it is a novel I felt as though I was reading a text book at times. Exotic names and places coupled with an extremely advanced vocabulary (my Kindle was stumped more than once) made for a slow read. I liked what I was learning, so did not stop reading. I would suggest reading this on an E-reader as there are so MANY people and places that can help remind the reader who is who. Todays problems in the Middle East take on another dimension after reading book. superb writing keeping my interest- although some work involved, in military strategy and social history when UK, France, etc. carved up mid east during WWI, intrigues against each other, even among UK elements but certainly against Arab fighters who they relieved upon to win war against Germany and Turkey. Fallout of Ottoman empire. Outrageous deception telling arabs they will have territory when maps already plotted out showing the reverse. Lawrence was outraged enough to commit traitorous act of telling arab leader of the treachery of the UK. He shown to be a military genius grounded in research on the terrain, language, different attributes of the tribes, understanding of medieval warfare methods they use and a nose for deception.
