About book Magic Room, The: A Story About The Love We Wish For Our Daughters (2011)

Although at first, The Magic Room wouldn't have been my first choice seeing as it was a book my mother read, I ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would. It was delightful to have the history of Becker's Bridal tied in with the stories of various women and each of their histories explained with much detail. Since the format was chapter based around each bride, the plot so to speak was easy to understand and although it jumped from woman to woman, in the end, all the stories were wrapped up and finished cleanly. I wasn't left hanging and wondering what happened to any of the brides. I think it is a must read for all women simply because of the lessons it teaches about marriage and how our society is so focused on the dress when they should be focused on the man (or woman). All in all, I couldn't put it down because I constantly wanted to know more about the outcomes of the women written about. It was a great read! Nonfiction. Author follows 8 brides and their mothers and families as they are preparing to get married. Also traces the 3 generations of owners of this bridal store, Becker’s Bridal, in a small town in Michigan called Fowler, Michigan. Kind of a neat insight into a bunch of things: small-town life, the bridal industry and its changes over the past 80 years or so, marriage, mother-daughter relationships, family relationships, what it takes for a good marriage, etc. Author is also author of The Girls From Ames, and co-author of The Last Lecture (about Randy Pausch; I think both Jill and I read this one), Gabby (about Gabrielle Giffords) and Highest Duty (about Captain Sully Sullenberger).
