About book Methland: The Death And Life Of An American Small Town (2009)
This is a woefully pathetic book. Inaccurate in the details and absolutely no annotations or acknowledgements. This book is conjured from tall tails the author may have heard in a bar or cafe. I know many of the people in the book and am familiar with the history. He gets some details of the story correct but takes great liberty and plays fast and loose with the facts. I think the book was poorly edited or not edited at all due to the numerous fallacies and misspellings, etc. If rewritten it might have made for an interesting magazine article. It is a work of fiction and opinion, it is mislabeled as nonfiction in my opinion. To my knowledge the author has not published another book since Methland, and it is easy to see why. I enjoyed the book Methland: The Death and Life of an American Small Town by Nick Reding a lot. One of the major reasons why I liked this book was because the author followed the different sides of the meth empire. He did this by showing it from different people's perspectives such a addict, a dealer, or even a lawyer. One thing that I thought was really cool about this is they all thought they were doing good except for the addict. The lawyer thought he was doing good by getting rid of the terrible drug, but the dealer thought that they were doing good because they were generating economy in a place where the economy was slowly dying. Then there was the addict who was just trying to survive, and keep their families afloat by taking the drug to work double shifts without needing sleep so they could generate more income. The only problem was that the drug meth is insanely addictive but the user doesn't think about that because all they can think about is how it allows them to run forever without needing breaks and how it gives them that good high feeling. I also really liked how the author actually took the time to explain how meth came about and how it affects the human body. One of the things that really surprised me was that meth started out as a prescription drug that doctors prescribed for many different things such as depression, schizophrenia, and even the common cold! Overall this book really opened up my eyes to how the real the meth empire is and how it has terrible effects on the human body. I highly recommend this book to others!
