About book Mighty Dads (2014)

Mighty Dads just might be one of my favorite picture books I have read with my girls in a long time. The story is playful and engaging, and the illustrations are exceptional. The author and illustrator pairing of Joan Holub and James Dean is absolutely brilliant. James Dean brings the magic of his illustrations from Pete the Cat to this picture book, and Joan Holub uses simple words and repetition to draw even the youngest readers into the story. My youngest daughter has absolutely fallen in love with this book, reading it repeatedly saying "Dadda Truck, Baby Truck" as she points to each truck. On its own, this book is a great read. But, the fact that it is about dads being great role models for their kids makes Mighty Dads a must have book for children to read with their dads. My husband enjoyed reading it with our daughters. He pointed out how, despite all the books in our house, there are so few about dads and their kids. We enjoyed each delightful page, taking time to talk about how each daddy truck was helping teach their baby truck how to do their jobs. This book will make a perfect father's day gift or a baby shower gift for a soon-to-be dad. Mighty Dads is destined to be an instant classic. * I was given this book free-of-charge by the author in exchange for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own. Excerpt:Mighty dads, strong and tall, help their children, young and small. They keep them safe and bolted tightand show them how to build things rightMighty dads by Joan Holub is a picture well the title says it all in itself,Mighty Dads, I have to be honest this was a picture book I was looking forward to check out. I really wanted to see when I saw on the front that the use of illustrations would be heavy machinery, how exactly would the message be portrayed and I was not disappointed. The message in the wording read like it was coming from the heart, someone at some point or still does see their father as a great person and in some shape or form larger than life. In some aspect who doesn’t? As much as we don’t like to admit when we are young we look up to our parents, our fathers in what their capable of and what they do and sacrifice for us. As children though, we do see them as something mighty and strong! Just like the illustrations used to portray throughout and I like how also on each page was a different type of equipment used, just like each and every one of us we are not the same and the author in a different way portrayed that in the illustrations. I feel young boys might enjoy this more than girls because well its heavy machinery! But it’s a tale fitting for any young child, the message is strong and to be appreciated, also a good father’s day present from any young one to their father, no better way to show that you appreciate and love than more than anything in the way that its illustrated and reads just as good as a hallmark card, well better. I appreciate the not overly complicated but still know what each piece of machinery is; I appreciate the illustrations, the line work and the color standing off against the pages, the fun in them. Any adult and any child will enjoy this book, even if there just starting to get into reading, they will more than not appreciate the illustrations throughout.
