About book Mr G: A Novel About The Creation (2012)

(God? goodness?) Einstein's Dreams So, I didn't like it. I felt like it was trying to give some sort of scientific explanation for God. It read like something along the lines of: "yeah, I know it's hard to take evolution and all, but if we step back far enough we can find God and the Devil playing in the Void before it all happened."I just wasn't impressed. Years ago, I read Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything (which is not very short) and felt like I had a somewhat better grasp on quantum physics. That was a good, approachable, scientific explanation. This was just muddled fantasy. I was annoyed that the Void is full of nothing, but then Aunt Penelope has a brush (and then a chair)...at least with her dress there was explanation of how and why it came to being. I also was not sure why we needed three of them. If G is god (and clearly he is) and he is better than Aunt P and Uncle D..then where did they come from? What purpose do they serve? Baphomet was clearly a rip off of Cerberus, but he also reminded me of the Chesire cat: "Then the creature did a somersault in such an extraordinary manner that its grin seemed not to move at all while the rest of it tumbled through the Void and returned to an upright position." And again, I wondered how these things moved through the Void and how they changed in the Void; as Lightman likes to remind the reader, I shall remind him: Something is not Nothing.Similarly, I did not get how pi (3.14) could exist prior to the universe (isn't the relationship between a circle's circumference and diameter a function OF THIS UNIVERSE? How would it exist in the Void where there are no such things as circles?) or how Mr. G says that the intelligent beings in his universe "discovered mathematics." Mathematics cannot exist in the Void; it is not that they existed and the universe is representative of them. It is that mathematics exist within the universe. It was all just too contradictory. Lightman likes to wax poetic about how the mere mortal mind cannot comprehend the vastness and emptiness of the Void; he clearly demonstrates this with his text.Maybe I'm just in a bad mood today, but really I didn't find much here that was appealing.

Do You like book Mr G: A Novel About The Creation (2012)?

I actually didn't finish this. I got about halfway through this very slim novel and got bored. Sad.

Got bored, couldn't make it half way. So uninterested in the premise of a creator.

Fascinating! It has upgraded me up to a new appreciation of our existence.
