The book Murder at Midnight was a fascinating tale of adventure and mystery. This book was one of the best mystery books I have ever read. The book follows a magician named Magnus and his poor servant Fabrizio as they go to trial for the superstition of magic. They must prove there innocents by the time the clock hits midnight. While I was reading this book I did feel emotionally attached. I felt bad for Fabrizio because he had to prove his innocents or he would be executed along side his master.Overall this was a very good book. It was a little slow and boring at times but the twists and turns keep you engaged. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mysteries. I have to admit, this is my first Avi read. And for some reason, I thought it was fantasy, but it's mystery and historical fiction--set in early renaissance Italy. Avi set up an interesting cast of characters. The old magician is grumpy, rough, and unforgiving, but wise and good. The main character is an unlearned and gullible boy who tries his best to do whats right, but never can quite figure out what that is. And Maria, the devil, as well as the friendly executioner were such fun additions to the story. I had my idea of how it'd all come together in the end, but I doubted myself several times as all the other characters contradicted each other, and muddled everything up.
