About book Night Of The New Magicians (2006)

Jack and Annie are at it again! This time the duo must find the evil sorcerer who is trying to steal secrets from The Magician of Sound whose “voice can be heard for a thousand miles”, The Magician of Light whose “fires glow, but they do not burn”, The Magician of the Invisible who “battles deadly enemies no one can see” and The Magician of Iron who “bends the metals of earth and triumphs over the wind” (p. 6-7). Jack and Annie find themselves pushed for time as they travel back over a hundred years to the World’s Fair in Paris in 1889 in order to save the magical secrets. Mary Pope Osborne brings adventure and light to her story Night of the New Magicians. This is a science fiction junior book.a.) The great strength from this story in shown in the amazing facts told about famous inventors from the 17th century.b.) Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Alva Edison, Dr. Louis Pasteur and Gustave Eiffel contributed many great inventions to the world during the 17th century. Telephone calls in houses around the world, light bulbs shining in the streets of busy cities, cures to numerous deadly diseases and skyscrapers so tall they could touch the sky were unheard of until these wise men decided “to work really hard, because genius is ninety-nine percent perspiration and only one percent inspiration” (p. 93-94).c.) Informational facts about the inventions are shared throughout Jack and Annie’s trip to the wonderful city of Paris. For example, readers can learn about Thomas Alva Edison’s invention of the incandescent light bulb. “When electricity passes through the thread, it gets very hot. There is no oxygen in the glass bulb, however, so the fire glows, but it does not burn” (p. 38). Also, readers learn about the remarkable Louis Pasteur. “He is the world’s foremost medical researcher”, battling the deadly germs “with research and vaccines and new medicines” (p. 51). In addition, facts about Gustave Eiffel are shared. He “is one of the world’s master engineers. He built the Eiffel Tower with glass and iron, the world’s newest building materials. Since these materials are lighter than stone or brick, structures can be built very tall” (p. 80). “Thanks to Mr. Eiffel and his tower, we can see the entire city (of Paris)” (p.96)“Thanks to Mr. Edison, ten thousand gas streetlamps in Paris will soon be replaced by electric lights” (p. 97)“Thanks to Dr. Pasteur’s institute, we will soon have cures for many more deadly diseases” (p.97).“Thanks to Mr. Bell, I’ll be bale to call you all on the telephone to tell you about it!” (p. 97)The information provided in Osborne’s text will be a great asset to any classroom studying these inventors from the past. Many boring stories are told repeatedly to students, making the information unrelateable and down right boring. Comprising a scientific adventure with historical facts about inventors and their creations will help students understand the information and will intimately increase their want to learn more. I would assign this chapter book to my students while studying famous inventors from the past. From the chapters I would ask students to find 2 other resources describing the inventors and their contributions to our world. I would divide the students into 4 groups, so each group will research 1 inventor. The students would prepare a presentation to share with classmates. The activity will incorporate history lessons with reading lessons, aide in the student’s ability to learn how to properly research a topic and promote group work within the classroom.
