Only Baldacci's fans can appreciate this book. I generally like his book for a quick read but this was sub-par. He has a certain pattern of writing and he generally sticks to it. Surprisingly this is written different till mid of the book. After which the story becomes pretty predicable and that maybe because of the length of the book. Had it been a full length novel, the story could have been fleshed out better. Very good short story! It's the first thing I read from this author. I'm not going to talk about the story because I don't want to give it away. The story itself is original and works as long as you reader agree to suspend your belief and go along without asking too many questions. The high point, for me, in this story is the narration! There is a very close relation between the narration and the main character. They are alike, similar in so many ways, a reflection of one another; uninvolved, distant, cold, precise and unaffected, and I'm not saying all that in a pejorative way. It feels as if the style of the narration adds to the description of the character, as if the way the text is constructed gives the reader an insight into the psychological profile of that character. Must have been fun to write this short piece!
