About book Nobody's Horse (2009)

I received this free audio book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This is a sweet story of a seventh grade girl named Abby. Abby is very lonely both at school (remember what 7th grade was like!?) and at home (her older brother Danny was thrown out of her home). She lives on the family ranch and finds companionship in the horses on her farm. Her strict father reminds her not to get too attached to the horses - he is all business and sells the Georges and the Jewels as soon as he can. Abby is instructed by her father to train one particular gelding who has bucked her off. He wants potential buyers to see that George is a horse that can be ridden by other little girls. This particular Ornery George is is proving that that will not be an easy task for Abby, but she is determined. This book is marked as appropriate for ages 10 and up. However, due to some language and content I recommend it for ages 12 and up. Really terrific book, and one that should be popular with horse lovers. Smiley does not gloss over the hard work and the tight schedules of horse & farm work that go into making it successful. I also loved the way she shows the parenting of the main character. So many books star only really horrible parenting, and her book succeeds in showing real humans doing the best they can. Loved this, highly recommend it.
