About book Not A Drill (2014)

And so in “Drill”, we have the latest short story to serve as teaser for the author’s newest full-length novel just published (“Personal”). Lee Child's fans like these brief tales, as do we, as sometimes they fill in little gaps about our hero Reacher. This one is a little different – Jack is drifting in upstate Maine close to the Canadian border, when he decides he wants to see the northern-most end of the N/S road, like he did once before in Florida at the southern end. A threesome with whom he hitches a ride is planning a wilderness hike, so he decides to ride with them just to look around, and soon a deep woods adventure ensues. When an important trail is closed, and guarded by Army personnel, Reacher is at his deductive best in figuring out what is going on and what to do about it.Our only objection was that the ending was a bit abrupt – and somehow the “explanation” of sorts left us somewhat unsure “whodunit”. Maybe you can figure it out… Short but not so sweet....Not the best "Reacher" I've read. This title finds Reacher once again hiking for the sake of it. He's exploring I-95 from end to end, and finds himself hitching a ride with a couple who are planning to hike in a desolate back woods where areas haven't been touched by human feet (or so they say). He ends up (with this couple and their driver) in Naismith, Maine. Something (as is usual) unexpected happens and so the Sunny Day of hiking turns into something a bit more sinister when the Army shows up and blocks off the wooded area. As usual, Reacher feels its is responsibility to "Save The Day". Child could have done (and quite honestly does) so much better than this one.
