About book Not My Type, A Single Girl's Guide To Doing It All Wrong (2000)

Well, first of all, this book featured a pleasant surprise for me: it takes place in Utah, which is where I'm from. It constantly made references to real-life Utah things, such as locations and the culture. And I understood all of it :)Now, onto the actual book. I was a little hesitant to read it at first, because I read a lot of chick-lit and have been trying to break away from it, but eventually I gave in. Unlike most of the chick-lit books I've read, which take place in high schools, this was about a college graduate, so it talks about more mature things, such as finding a career and entering mature relationships. I really liked that about this book. I enjoyed the start of this book, because it was funny but also thoughtful. However, about halfway through the book, I seemed to gradually lose interest in it. That's mostly my fault, though. When there's romance in stories, I prefer it to be more of a sub-plot and not be the main focus of the story. This is a romance novel. You can't blame a cat for being a cat. Pepper Spicer is not in a good place. She ended her engagement at the last minute and is now stuck sharing a room with her little sister while she works a lame job and pays off massive debt she accumulated because of the wedding. When her father challenges her to take control of her life and pursue a career she loves, plus write a weekly thank you note to focus on her blessings, she accepts the challenge. The interview for the job of her dreams is a complete disaster, but she gets another job writing an anonymous dating column chronicling the lame dates she goes on. She is not looking for a relationship and makes that very clear, but sometimes love happens, even when you fight really hard for it not to.I think this was my favorite of Melanie Jacobson's books I've read so far. I thought Pepper was hilarious and found myself laughing out loud at several of her dating experiences. Cute story. Again, like her other books I've read, this was written in the LDS singles ward culture, but not preachy.
