About book O Mé Rodině A Jiných Mimozemšťanech (2012)

I have read and adored all Kathy Lette's previous books. She had to be one of my favourite authors. This book is the first of hers that I have found to be tediously try-hard. The constant one-liner jokes, innuendo and silly humour (one on top of the other) become droll eventually and detract from the story. I've always loved Lette's humour, particularly in her previous books, but there is a fine line between tasteful, skilled wit and Over The Top "please get me out of here" silliness. Very disappointed. I did enjoy this book. I have a teen with Asperger's, and did have many 'Been there done that" moments in the story. Perhaps 'when' you read this book is important, I needed, and enjoyed the continual comic relief. I liked that it was not all about Merlin. Having someone else revealing there inner thoughts, thou not always matching my own, was comforting when you have felt no one else understands the stresses. I also feel that it is about Lucy NOT truly excepting her son for who he is until the end. When my boy was younger he did spurt facts like Merlin, he did not pick up on the cues that said stop, he would ask strange questions " Would you rather be a bacteria or a virus, you have to pick one Mum, you have to chose one." then he would debate for hours why one was better than the other. Education options have been a nightmare. Like Lucy it took nearly loosing my son (suicide attempts) for me to move my goal posts and change my definition of success. The greatest gift I have been given is my Asperger's son, he made me more authentic and less judgmental.

Didn't actually finish it..couldn't get past second chapter . The style is really irritating.

I loved this book. How Lucy uses her humour to deal with her challenges is fantastic.

Loved this book. The mother's sense of humour is the driving force of her strength.

True to life in many ways but a few too many corny one liners for my taste.
