About book One Last Thing Before I Go (2012)

I liked this book okay, but I didn't love it. I found some of the story-telling devices hard to accept. (Silver thinking things in his head and then finding out he actually said them out loud. I mean, really? Is that even a thing?? Seemed like an easy way out for the author, in my opinion) I also really hated the ending, so ambiguous and open-ended. That being said, though, it was a fast read, funny in spots and serious in others, and sometimes both at the same time. Good, not great. I am such sucker for Jonathan Tropper's books. I am aware of how repetitive and how cliché they are, but there is something in his voice (literary voice I mean) that just makes me feel like really engaged in his characters. He is a perfect cross between Nick Hornby and Woody Allen. His novels being a mix of witty romantic comedy and family drama. This one is about a middle-aged fuckup, called Silver, and his quest to make amends with his teenage daughter and his ex-wife. The similarities with Nick Hornby's "High Fidelity" are pretty obvious, with both novels making many references to rock classics and having every other chapter little snippets of the main character's past relationships. However, despite the uninspiring plot, I had a lot of fun reading it and could not stop until I reached the end. I just hope this guy never stops writing.
