I'm sure there is more to this book than the boring, pretentious protagonist, whose obsession with expensive watches is not only obnoxious, but also dull. This philandering novelist is struggling to write his second book, but he's too full of himself and his newfound money to do much but hang out at a secret vacation spot with other celebrity types, sext with one of his fans, and consume himself with the watch brands and models each person was wearing. I know this author is capable of remarkable work, but this novel is not an example of it. Nicolas, an unguided and a bit purposeless young man, ends up writing a best-selling novel that gets made into an Oscar winning movie. The fame and attention pretty much takes over his focus and becomes a barrier between him and important people in his life, and very negatively affects his judgment and moral character. He can no longer think beyond himself and what he wants, and in the face of lots of opportunity, he consistently makes the bad decision. I think it was a fine, but not captivating story. The sexting portion, which really wasn’t necessary, was just too weird and very much came out of nowhere.
Do You like book Onvoltooid Verhaal (2013)?
Nowhere near as compelling as "Sarah's Key", but still a good, interesting read.
