About book Out Of The Shallows (2000)

The sequel to Into the Deep finds Charley broken up with Jake (again) and trying to placate her parents by taking the LSAT and agreeing to go to law school. This book also follows the back and forth in time format as the first title, with Out of the Shallows going between the present tense and the past when Jake and Charley were doing well and what led to the break up.Although the format is the same and all of the characters from the previous book are present, there's something lacking in this title in that Charley is a constant nervous wreck, doesn't share her feelings with anyone and is barely clinging to any sort of relationship with her family including her sister. It was very whiney and at points the reader wants to shake Charley to snap her out of her funk. Jake is a saint in this book constantly trying to win Charley back and giving her more time than she deserves to really decide what she wants and Charley seems to forget that this is her life and even though she wants to make her parents happy, she needs to live her life for her not them.Definitely more new adult than the YA it's billed as due to the college/grad school age and amount of language and sex throughout. If you read the first book, read this one as well. If not, only read if you want the be frustrated that the headstrong character in the first book turns into a lost soul in this one. This was actually even better than the first one. I seriously don't get it how come it has a rating less than 4! The issues faced by Charley in this one are more heart wrenching because she had to choose between love and family! It was way more of an emotional roller coaster than the first one! I absolutely loved this one just like I loved the 1st book! Or maybe even more. Even though with every chapter, there was a back and forth shift in time, but it worked well for keeping the suspense alive. For instance, from the beginning, the mentions to cemetery and the guilt eating up Charley and her father's strange behavior kept me worried about Andie! And it was one of the main reasons that I craved for more of the story at turn of every page. And although, the end was somewhat rushed up, but still it was much better than that of 'Into the Deep' where Jake and Charley ended up being together but issues still lingered between them.P.S.: Lowe was one character for whom I really want a separate book.
