About book Pack Alpha (2009)

I have missed reading paranormal romance. Sometimes it's difficult to make time to read full length PNR novel series when RL get busy. So I was very excited when I found this series. It's full of short PNR reads which are written well and entertaining. I loved the sex scenes! So hot and descriptive without being overly wordy like some authors tend to do when writing such scenes. This had enough drama and plot to keep me entertained. I would have loved more world building but I know that's difficult in short reads. But I'm hoping I will get more acquainted with this world after reading more of this book in this series.Looking froward to reading the next book! Marissa left her pack as a teen and never looked back. As a were that can’t shift she is used to being treated as less. When her sister decides to mate and invites her to the ceremony she doesn’t want to go but also doesn’t want to disappoint her either. Going to visit the pack her sister joined brings back bad memories but as she gets to know the pack and Alpha, she discovers that maybe all packs aren’t bad.I enjoyed this story. It’s the first book in the Were Chronicles. As a starter book, its better than most since it doesn’t focus on world building and creating a complex story arc that will be drawn out through several books, it just focuses on the characters and this pack. The later books will explain more about the world and the society of the wolves but you aren’t inundated with a ton of information in the first book. There is also no cliffhanger so it’s not necessary to read the whole series to get a happily ever after. While I enjoyed the story there were some things I didn’t like. I would get confused with the attitudes of the characters. When Marissa meets the Alpha, Gage, she is immediately antagonizing and pushing his buttons. But half a page later she is apologizing and being all meek. Then Gage gets understandable upset with her attitude and is angry at her but when he sees her later he feels this undeniable chemistry with her and they go at each other on the forest floor. It was just a bit odd. I think Marissa was bi-polar. I know her character has issues with her old pack but the way the information came out it made her seem crazy and, as I said, bi-polar. Looking back I can see why she behaved as she did but in the moment…I thought she was nuts.I also didn’t like the conflict with her old pack. It seems pretty far fetched to me that her ex boyfriend is so unstable and such a jerk that even though he hasn’t seen or spoken to her in ten years he throws a major hissy fit about her coming back to his pack. I mean, why? Was he desperate? Lonely? Crazy? The excuse Marissa comes up with is not even close to a reason for causing the problems he did. I did like Gage and Logan, his beta and best friend. I would have liked to spend more page time with them since Logan stole the scenes he was in. His joking and relaxed personality was a welcome change from Marissa’s craziness. Gage was a bit of a control freak but as an Alpha that was expected. He was a good match for Marissa since he seemed to understand her and was able to calm her down or comfort her when she was having problems. I would have liked a bit more time with them when they weren’t fighting each other but this was a novella.
