About book Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, Vol. 2 (2011)
Oh Usagi and Mamoru, someday you will live happily ever after, but not today.This is my favourite volume of the Sailor Moon manga simply because I love how Usagi finds out Mamoru is Tuxedo Mask (I am sorry but the anime version is just sad in comparison, he has a rose therefore he must be Tuxedo Mask, please). In the manga it is so much more then just a mask or a rose, it is the colour of his eyes. Usagi even says that she is surprised she never saw it before, the colour of his eyes, like she could be sucked it. So much more emotional then the anime.I also really like how the reader learns more about Mamoru's past. What happened to his parents and how it was not an actual decision to become Tuxedo Mask, it just sort of happen when he started having dreams about the Silver Crystal. It makes it more magical, like he is destined for something (*cough* Endymion *cough, cough*).The whole past thing is a big thing I like about the manga over the anime. Not just the past of Serenity and Endymion, but also the past of the Kings of Heaven as the Endymion's advisors, an aspect that I always hated was not included in the anime. They are not just evil villain, they were just corrupted by an evil power, and it is this evil power that prevents them from ever returning to who they once were. Creates a nice emotional connection to these characters. Also this manga introduces one of my favourite characters, Sailor V aka Sailor Venus, who is show in the manga as intelligent and badass. I always knew who the Moon Princess was but Venus plays the part very well. The whole Mamoru is brainwashed thing can get boring at times, but it is only the last half of the manga. (I should also say that I love the drawings, but I am pretty sure I always say that!) Naoko Takeuchi's art style is really interesting, it's very flowy and emotional. What really stood out to me is that other than establishing shots here and there, locations aren't very concrete. Often the characters back a white space or a pattered background. This lends a kind of ethereal feel to the manga as if this is a silk spun fantasy. This makes the anime which is very much grounded in day to day and place to place an interesting counterpoint. Insofar as the story goes, the manga takes a much different route, dealing in this volume with the arrival of Sailor Venus and the past which deals with Endymion and the four generals who were once his. I think it's an interesting facet that the anime didn't mention at all. It all felt a little rushed, to, too me and I think I would prefer the almost more concrete anime form with longer character development. That being said, Kunzite's brief burst of memory before he was possessed again was interesting and shows just how far the possession goes. The one thing I don't like about the repackaging of the Sailor Moon manga is the way they took out the writing of Naoko herself, in the little columns on the sidebars where she talks about her inspiration or just random facets of her life. Those are always some of my favorite parts and I don't really think they needed to be removed.
