About book Real Marriage: The Truth About Sex, Friendship & Life Together (2012)

Since Mark Driscoll makes a habit of being controversial, I expected this book would do likewise. Yes, it had it's share of explicit content, but all in the context of marriage. His chapter on "can we do that" was pretty interesting, addressing questions married couples have today that wasnt even on the table for discussion a generation ago.And there needs to be more discussion on this topic in the church, although this setting is probably better than sunday morning sermons. All in all, I really enhoyed the book, and probably my favorite aspects was Driscoll's emphasis on friendship in marriage. He asks you to reflect on all the effort put into your first day of your marriage. But he asks how much effort are you putting into marriage so that the last day of your marriage will be just as impactful....will it end early in divorce, will it end with regret as you look at your spouses grave, or will it be a day of rejoicing for the time you had together and the impact your marrige had. I found this question powerful.I also like his comment that how your spouse looks today is to be your "standard of beauty". When you were 20, you were into 20 year olds. When you're 50, you're into 50 years olds. Whatever her physical appearance is now, that is what you are into. Good advice!Again, the sections on working on your freindship in marriage was what I found to be the most valuable teaching in this book....even from Mark Driscoll!I would recommend this for newlyweds, AND seasoned veteran couples. I've already learned a lot from the "Love and Respect" series by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs. My husband and I will be married for 5 years in May 2014 and we are currently in the best part of marriage thus far. It took me realizing my husband needs respect and he realized that I need love. I enjoy Mark Driscoll's preaching and points of view, especially biblically. This book is intense; believe me. However, if you are married, read it. If you are about to be married/close to the wedding, read it! The sex chapters are intense but very insightful and answer a lot of questions. If you have had any sexual abbuse by an adult or another child, I recommend this. It supports you being totally honest with your spouse. It was refreshing how honest and forthcoming the writing was. All in all, I recommend it. If your not married or engaged, please do not read the chapters on sex. They are too innapropriate for a single person.
