About book Research For The Social Improvement And General Betterment Of Lydia Goldblatt & Julie Graham-Chang (2010)

I wish these books had been around when I was younger. The scrapbook style makes it fun to look at and the story is one that most young girls can relate to. My favorite part is how the author does not make a big deal of the fact that one of the characters has two dads. The author chooses not to explain the situation to the audience, and instead allows the readers to understand the situation intuitively, just like a reader would do with a family that had a mom and dad instead. I found this very refreshing. Lydia and Julie are best friends, yet no two girls are more different. Julie has two dads (both gay, yet not in so many words. This is, after all, a kids' book.). Lydia is the daughter of a divorced mom who can be a little trying on the nerves Lydia and Julie think they need to be popular in middle school before they get into high school. Boy are they gonna learn life lessons the hard way! They try everything from getting into a musical to learning stick-fighting techniques. They keep goofing up, yet still they persevere, like all good girls do. Soon they may find what all of us learn in our lives: it's okay to not be popular and be yourselves. Even the Bible says stuff about popularity, for "verily I tell you, they have HAD their reward." I think kids will laugh and learn from this wise and witty and wonderfully drawn book. It's not too harsh or too soft. It's just right for kids.
