About book Rise Of The Huntress (2000)

The seventh book about the seventh son of a seventh son, what could go wrong? I confess a bias for loving this series from book 1, and this entry does not disappoint. Overall, I like the style of writing, which is light, and the pacing of the action, which is fast. In this book, I like Tom’s continued growth as an apprentice Spook; in this adventure he seems to spend more time away from Old Gregory, thus showing readers his ability to problem solve mysteries of the dark. However, even more compelling in this book is the Spook’s development. Old Gregory may have been the Spook for decades, but Tom’s outlook on life and what they do continues to rub off on him. As regular readers know, the series continues to darken. The back cover recommends readers ages 10 and up, but I would suggest readers be a bit older. It’s a heavy story, and what Tom goes through in each book is very intense; his struggle between the light and the dark is scary to think about, even for me! Still some important issues are dealt with, and Tom continues to demonstrate a solid moral compass.I cannot wait to read the next entry. When there's no house in Chipenden to stay in anymore the Spook, Tom and Alice have to flee and they go to the island Mona. They aren't welcome there, most of the people they meet want to get rid of them. The island has some dark secrets they need to unravel and there's Bony Lizzy, who has escaped from the Spook's home, to deal with, so they can't go anywhere for a while.Tom is captured over and over again, will someone come to his rescue or does he need to rescue himself? It isn't easy for him to stay out of the hands of the enemy. Tom has to fight some cruel creatures and he almost doesn't make it. There are few allies, but he and the Spook need the ones they do have very much to fight all evil that has been housing on the island. This book is more cruel and harsh than the previous books in the series and the creatures of the dark are really gross. Just the way I like it, another great Spook's book.
