About book Second Watch (2013)

This is the 21st J.P. Beaumont book. Beau (as he is called) had a double knee replacement at the start of the book. After surgery, and on some powerful painkillers, Beau starts to have what he calls "dreams" in which he talks to dead people as if they are there in the hospital with him. The first is a young girl, his first homicide case, that wasn’t solved nearly 40 years ago. The second person was his platoon leader from Vietnam, Lieutenant Douglas Davis. Beau is upset by the dreams/flashbacks. He slowly begins to work on both things. He gets the homicide cold case reopened and he begins his search for the Lt’s former fiancée. As the cold case is being investigated twists and turns come up in the story that also includes what appears to be a murder/suicide. As expected everything is resolved, but it’s a nice read as it takes place. The Vietnam story is intriguing. Well written book. I would recommend it to others who like to read murder mysteries. I loved this J.P. Beaumont mystery. It was very interesting about how JP Beaumont decides to open up a cold case which also opens up his own memories from the past. It creates an opportunity for Beaumont to share information about his past with Mel Soames that he has never shared. As a result their relationship deepens. There is a lot of closure for Beau in this book. It is fascinating to go back to the 1970s and to realize how primitive the crime solving measures were compared to today.
