If you truly wish to appreciate the sarcastic humor in this one you should definitely revive your reading of Jane Austen's original novel since this parody relies heavily on it. I believe that Jane Austen, if she were alive, would definitely laugh a lot at this book since she herself wrote a satirical history of England when she was only 17 years old and that is telling something. The aquatic fantasy added here by Ben Winters occasionally reminded me of Lovecraft and it has most certainly revitalized the story with monster attacks, because previously it had solely focused on romance . The only minus is that I was sometimes confused with anachronisms and not always sure when the story took place; also, I wish the writer would have altered the original story a bit more by exploring the perilous ocean concept and adding more protagonists instead of "sticking to the canon". I've never read sense and sensibility so I can't compare the differences between the two but I do know that I enjoyed this so much. the sea monsters added extra drama and adventure to a classic story (which I sometimes find hard to keep engaged with due to lack of adventure). haven't given it 5 stars because I did skim read the last few pages after getting a tiny bit fed up of waiting for elinor and marriane to get married lol. Still enjoyed in nonetheless
