About book Short Nights Of The Shadow Catcher: The Epic Life And Immortal Photographs Of Edward Curtis (2012)

This is a very interesting biography of Edward Curtis, an outstanding photographer of Native American life. It provides not only a view into Curtis' complex personality but also into the Native American cultures he was recording, and the social times and context within which he was working. A very worthwhile read for anyone interested in those topics. It is a little uneven at the end, but the author accomplishes so much, this can be forgiven. This was one of those books where you sigh when it's finished... both because of the sad story and because you're sad the book is over! What a beautifully written account of brilliant, passionate, flawed man and his quest to record what remained of Native American culture before it was too late! Curtis' accomplishments were profound, not just as a photographer, but as a traveler, writer, linguist, and anthropologist, as the author makes abundantly clear. The reader feels a part of Curtis' 'race against time' to record Native culture during the turn of the century as the times changed so quickly.Timothy Egan writes intelligently, equitably, and keeps the narrative tension at the correct balance. You feel his respect for his subject, yet he does not mince on Curtis' flaws.A highly recommended glimpse at the vanishing Old West before it disappeared completely...
