About book Skin Tight (2010)

Well, more like I'd give this one 3.5 stars. I didn't like it as much as the first book, but still, I quite liked it. The main villain was an absolutely scary individual. The parts where we got to see things from his point of view were chilling and, really, made me feel extremely repulsed. However, I was disappointed that he was so quickly and rather easily dispatched. It felt like all the work Ava Gray put in making him such a genuinely scary bad guy was too easily swept under the rug. I wasn't satisfied with that resolution. Other than that, it's a rather good read. The forensic accountant with a secret to hide meets up with the man that betrayed her one year ago. Can they move past her hurt and his personal vendetta to find love? What I liked:1. First, I love that Ava Gray never apologizes for the lives her characters are living. Soren kills people. Granted, they are generally people who one can argue deserve killing, but this is not a book full of shiny, idealistic marines. The books feel grittier than your run of the mill romance, and I really enjoyed that.2. Soren's "power" is fascinating to me. The idea that people see him the way they want to see him, or how they expect to see him, and the ramifications this has for him are so interesting. 3. Let's be real: Ms. Gray can write a smexy scene. Better yet, she can write one that is both hot and moves the character development forward. Nothing disappointing here! What I didn't like:1. The villian, Dr. (?) Rowan, was one step short of Dr. Evil for me. I can even buy that he's a psychopath bent on torturing humans, but that his ultimate goal is to create a super race? Or sell his new super heroes? Or just run away with his pet experiment? I'm still not really sure, and it all seemed just this side of over the line for me.2. Likewise, the world building around Soren's gift was a little crunchy for me. I love the premise that people see only what they expect to see and how that might impact the person with the gift, but I'm still not entirely sure how this caused his family to believe he was dead. If anything, wouldn't a mother be hopeful when hope seems lost? I'm not sure.Even with these few nitpicks, I really enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to reading more from Ava Gray.
