About book Snowflakes Fall (2013)

Combining a great illustrator and fantastic writer give the reader a delightful experience.Kellogg's interpretations provide strong support of the text. His trademark characters and style are evident, but there is a new depth to the colors and details.Would be a wonderful book to prompt discussion of childhood memories, or to introduce the wonders of winter to an unsuspecting newcomer to northern life. Ideal mentor text for poetry that doesn't rhyme! This picture book kind of puzzles me. It's a beautiful book, the writing is lovely, and I do love snow. And when it gets to the night part, and those "frantic, icy snowflakes scratch the window glass," well, that is just gripping and gorgeous. I love the entire book until I get to the final spread: "And we remember the children--No two the same--All beautiful." Huh? I saw afterward that this is connected to the Newtown/Sandy Hook tragedy, but most kids who happen upon this book will have no idea of that. The ending just comes out of nowhere. It was such a beautiful homage to individuality, but I feel the ending falls completely flat. Of course, this is a very worthy cause to raise money for, but I think if this book is designed to bring comfort in the face of tragedy, then it needs to not be so oblique. And if it's a book for everyone, affected by tragedy or not, then the ending doesn't work for me at all.
