About book Spooks: I Am Grimalkin (2012)

This series is never not good. They are fast-moving stories filled with witches, beasts, fights, ghouls of every stripe and narrow escapes. They can also be gruesome but this is a horror series so that's no surprise. This book is a bit of departure in that Grimalkin is the protagonist (and narrator) and Tom Ward (the apprentice spook) sits this one out. She's a great character, though. Also, one note: I've recently learned that this series will end with book 13. Fitting, that. *Won from Goodreads First Reads* This book is not aimed at my age group. And why that doesn't always matter with most books, the fact that this is for younger readers shines though. You don't need to have read the rest of the series to understand this. I've not read any of the other Spooks book and I could follow it from the begining. However I just couldn't connect to this at all. It's not a bad book and I think it would be enjoyed more by younger readers, it just wasn't for me. The main character is Grimalkin, she's a kick ass witch assassin, on a mission to keep the Fiend's head in her possession until a way can be found to destory it. But it's hard to get close to Grimalkin because she seems so emotionless. A bit like a robot and her fight scenes are boring becuase even when the author trys to lead you into thinking that Grimalkin might lose, you know she won't. Which brings me to the plot. Grimalkin runs for a bit, turns and fights some witches, she runs for a bit, turns and fights and repeat. It's just dull. This book will not have me rushing out to buy the rest of the Spooks series. I was disappointed in this one. The cover is pretty awesome, it's just a shame the story inside is not.
