About book Spork (2010)

This fictional story follows its main character, Spork, as he tries discover and define who he is. Spork's mom is a spoon, and his dad is a fork, and Spork sticks out among the other kitchen utensils. Although he tries to look more spoonish and then more forkish, he is criticized by the other utensils for being "too round" or "too pointy", and he never seems to be chosen at mealtime. That is, until a messy thing finds its way into the kitchen...something that neither a simple fork nor spoon can handle. That's when Spork realizes that he is just a little pointy, just a little round, but most importantly, he's just right. This story could be used to teach literacy as it contains vocabulary terms that children may find difficult (i.e. cutlery). The illustrations, created by Isabelle Arsenault, will indeed capture and maintain students' attention with their detail that corresponds to the text and enhances the story, and the language used by Kyo Maclear is age appropriate for students to follow and understand. Young children may not be able to comprehend the interracial implications of this story, but they will understand that Spork's parents try convincing him that he is perfect just the way he is. Spork feels lonely and excluded for being seen as too round or too pointy. Where does he fit in? How can he make a difference? In a world surrounded by spearing forks and stirring spoons, Spork will have readers hoping and rooting for him to find his purpose and path to the kitchen table!I just adored this book’s simple yet brilliant way of addressing multiculturalism or “multi-cutlery”. :) Spork made me smile, think, and clear a spot in my silverware drawer!A wonderful book that presents a meaningful lesson in a fun, clever way for kids. 3/25/12

I had to have this book when I saw it was about a spork. It's a cute little read; just okay though.
