About book Strings Attached - Audio (2011)

Don't take my ratings too hard or too seriously - I take them literally as they are described. For me, this was an okay book. Far be it from me thinking it was bad - the storyline was interesting and rather involving, and at points quite thrilling as well, but I didn't necessarily "like" or "love" it, and it definitely didn't blow my mind. On the other hand, I completely understand why other readers might love the book. This "okay" factor primarily stems from the fact that I never really connected to the main character and narrator, and I was far from actually caring about any of the characters in the novel. The only one I felt for - Jamie - was so badly marginalized I came to question why he was even in the story. His arc is never really finished or well explained, but frequently came up as extra drama. So - on that point - I wish he either wasn't in the story, as it wasn't really necessary - or that the "love triangle" was done well and that the author followed through. The problem for me was also that it maybe spread the narrator, with whom I didn't connect well in the first place, a bit too thin. There's the family problems, the dancing, the abusive relationship, the mob storyline, the random neighbor storyline, jumping from the past to the present timeline... None of it was done badly, but seeing as Kit never managed to pull me in very deep, the fact that she also pulled me in a lot of different directions didn't really do it for me. So, not an unsatisfying read, but quite honestly, nothing that will stick with me. I read this because I was a big fan of Blundell's What I Saw and How I Lied. While this book does offer a very fun and interesting escape to the chorus-girl scene of 40s New York, I did not find myself emotionally connecting to the story as much as I had with Blundell's other books. The heroine was a bit flat to me and I had trouble investing in what happened to her. Still a good easy read, however.

Another 3.5 stars. I nice historical fiction, but it didn't really grab me.

I wasn't a fan of Blunderer's other novel but this was fascinating.
