About book Tail Of The Moon Prequel: The Other Hanzo[u] (2009)

A ninja-historical-romance-with-hints-of-comedy? Yes, please. I probably wouldn't have picked this up on a normal day, but it was on four of my Recommended lists (I separate my manga by genre), so I had to give it a go. It was a pleasant surprise. This being a prequel, I am not quite sure how the series will start off. The story was quite complete, but I'll read on, that's for sure. The story starts off mostly on the romantic note, as the main character Kaguya, who is suffering from amnesia, is introduced as working in the red-light district during the Waring States Era. The main guy, a frequent customer, Hanzou, happens to spot her and it all unravels from there. Even though Kaguya is not a prostitute, he's drawn to her, and soon realizes the scar she has on her back (which she obviously does not remember how she got it) was from his sword. Another spill down a slope brings back Kaguya's, now Sara's, memory, and the real trouble begins. She's actually a highly skilled ninja assassin, and Hanzou is on the wrong side.Though Sara/Kaguya lacked a little bit of depth at the beginning, she comes around very well. Hanzou, though a little lecherous, is fun, and they make a good pair. I thought this was a cute story. I'm glad that I read this before starting the series even though it was published later. I think this one is more dramatic than the regular series which seems more like a romantic comedy. Either way, I like the main characters who were the focus and I thought it did a good job of using them to introduce the guy who is probably one of the main characters of the regular series. I wonder if there's any connection between the lucky charm (rabbits tail) and the main female character of the regular series (her name, usagi, is the Japanese word for rabbit).
