About book The Captain: The Journey Of Derek Jeter (2011)

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and all of its action and suspense.I really enjoy reading fictional books that incorporate sports and help me expand my knowledge of great athletes. One of my favorite parts in this novel is how well the author uses powerful, yet passionate details to describe Derek Jeter's life. I also enjoyed the pattern of using dates of each event, making it very helpful to know what he is talking about and why it happened. But On the other hand, I really disliked some of the wording that Ian O'Connor used making it hard to read and enjoy. But Overall, I enjoyed this book very much and would recommend it to people who enjoy sports and expanding there knowledge of great sport athletes. I despise the Yankees, but have always thought fondly of Derek Jeter. And with Jeter having recently announced that the 2014 season would be his last, I decided that my annual pre-baseball season read would be this book. I did not regret my decision, devouring the book's 370-plus pages in a week's worth of evenings. Given the reverence that exists for the Yankee captain, I was initially concerned that this book would descend into hagiography. Not so. Well written and meticulously researched, Ian O'Connor deserves a standing ovation of the kind Yankees fans typically reserve for the book's subject, Mr. Jeter. Instead of relying exclusively on second-hand sources, i.e., the labor of others, O'Connor conducted interviews with dozens of current and former ballplayers and others, and leaned quite a bit on his own coverage of Jeter over the years. I agree with the assessment of longtime baseball scribe and Yankees beat writer Buster Olney that this book will serve as the definitive Jeter biography long after No. 2's playing days are over.
