About book The Case Of The Gypsy Goodbye: An Enola Holmes Mystery (2011)

I think this was the final Enola Holmes book... I'm reading them way out of order. But that doesn't matter - they're wonderful.Enola wants to discover what happened to her mother, and she wants the respect and affection of her older brothers, who she very much looks up to. But her brothers have been convinced of her need for finishing school, a suitable suitor, and a much more feminine demeanor, etc. Because of these annoying male convictions, Enola has struck out on her own, using her knack for disguise and her sharp mind to make a living on her own in the city of London. These struggles set up the background action, and in the foreground of each book is some mystery. Springer has done her research, having read all the original Holmes stories (as have I, so I appreciate this effort), and keeping the flavor of them. DeLIGHTful middle grade series, but I'd recommend them for any Holmes fan who doesn't have an unreasoning prejudice against "kids books." #6 already? I read the first in this series a while back and really enjoyed it. Had no idea they were up to #6 already. When Duquesa (sp?) Blanchefleur goes missing, Enola Holmes is on the case (under false pretenses). At the same time, a mysterious coded message from Enola's mother leads to Enola teaming up with her brothers Sherlock and Mycroft to decipher the letter (which contains quite sad news). Everything is nicely tied up at the end, though I felt there wasn't nearly enough tension over the mystery of the Duquesa's disappearance. Still, I like the character of Enola and how she ties in with the rest of the Holmes family. I just wish the mystery were a bit more gripping.

Nice conclusion to the Enola Holmes series. And of course narration by Kellgren is superb as always.

This is a nice full-circle conclusion to a very enjoyable mystery series for older children.
