About book The Chance (2014)

FBI agent, Laine Carrington, has been wounded by a gunshot wound. Her wounds extend beyond the physical and into the mental realm as she grapples with the aftermath of a deep cover assignment as well as her father’s disdain of her career path. On leave for recuperation, Laine decides to return to Thunder Pointe, the place where her deep cover assignment earned her the gunshot wound. Laine has ties to the town because of people she rescued from the compound of a cult.Eric Gentry, reformed criminal, has relocated to Thunder Pointe to be near his daughter he only recently learned of. He has purchased a gas station/garage and is growing it into a thriving business. Eric has ties to the town due to his ex-girlfriend and daughter.Laine and Eric are attracted to one another from the first meeting. Both have obstacles to overcome. Eric worries he isn’t good enough for Laine and Laine is trying to decide how to live the rest of her life, which includes both her career and being estranged from the father from whom she so desperately wants approval. The characters, as well as the secondary characters, are warm and genuine. This is a story which has that "slice of life" kind of feel- real life problems and relationship growing pains. There are no big fireworks exploding in this book, just an everyday kind of feel which I found sweet. I enjoyed the book simply due to the fact it could have been the lives of people I’ve known. However, judging from the reviews, there are many who found this tale boring. If you are a reader who wants more emotional angst and impediments thrown into your main characters’ lives, this may not be the book for you. If you’re looking for something akin to the more everyday life type of romance, you’ll probably like this book. I have enjoyed the Thunder Point series. I have not read them in the right order, but still I have enjoyed them. In this story we have FBI agent Laine Carrington returning to Thunder Point for rest and recuperation after being shot in the shoulder. She has taken a leave of absence from the FBI for a year so that she can take time for herself, something she hasn't done in a long time. She is also running away from his struggles and anger towards her father. They have not been on good terms for quite some time and she is finally so fed up that she wants to get away from him. She loves her twin brother and his family but she wants nothing to do with her father. What she doesn't expect is to run into a relationship at Thunder Point. She has had relationships before but nothing that was permanent nor even good. She just had distractions before. But Eric is something a bit different. He is kind, level headed, mature and not intimidated by her being in the FBI. He also is a bit strong willed and worried about her because of the work she has done. She doesn't usually let a man get under her skin and into her heart. But Eric is different. There is a secondary relationship that will occur. That is between the local Real Estate Agent, Ray Anne and a drifter mechanics by the name of Al Michel. Al comes to work for Eric for a short time but finds Ray Anne a bit more than he maybe bargained for. He has found someone that he might want to settle down with, but then again he is a drifter. The two stories are well balanced and there is a third plot that runs through the book, but I won't spoil it by giving that one away in the review. If you love romance novels you will love this one. You will grow to care about each of the characters and want to see the best for them and for their relationships. But things aren't tidy. They get down right messy and people get hurt. So, it is pretty true to real life.I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
