About book The Changelings (2012)

I really enjoyed this book. Tony and Jayne become fast friends at school but Tony had known stuff about Jayne she's never told anyone. So one day when he decides they are running away and admits to Jayne about knowing this stuff she decides to get away. They travel to Miami where they meet up with a group of homeless kids led by Jared. Soon they have an opportunity to make a decent amount of money and decide to take it. But things aren't what they seem. Jayne finds out she can talk to trees and enlists their help throughout a series of tests to get to the end and get their money. What she doesn't realise is she is something more than human. When at the end they are told they can become changelings and learn their Fae ancestry all of them choose to take this leap......except Tony.Got quite a shock when it ended there. I need to read the second book There are aspects to this book, both good and bad, that are leaving me on the fence as to whether I like it as much as I think I do. I'm going to continue reading the series, at least the next book, to try and figure it out. To clarify about these aspects I'll say this. The main character, is unapologetic, flawed, foul-mouthed, rambunctious and doesn't shy away from her sexuality. That's not to say that there's smut in this book, but rather that she acknowledges she has hormonal feelings and isn't ashamed of them. I personally rather enjoy Jayne's personality, and the cursing helps. Maybe its just me relating her to who I was at that age, but if I was in a similar situation her choice words would be my choice words not "Oh goodness, whatever shall we do now with this unhappy predicament?" Instead "Fuck this asshole I'm going to stab him with a stick" (not a direct quote but close). The other characters in the book aren't bad, per se, but they feel a little underdeveloped and typecast. The love interest, the best friend/moral compass, the good soldier, the good boy, the innocent, the traitor. Parts of the story feel far too similar to the Hunger Games trilogy to me, which is one of the reason's I'm having a hard time rating above a 3-star. That and the hints at of a love triangle. At the same time though, the love triangle is presented differently than I've seen in books past where either the heroine struggles with her feelings or completely tries to deny them. In this case Jayne is kinda like "Hmm wonder what juggling two men would be like?" The last thing that really bothers me falls along the line of the love triangle with the "everyone save the heroine" mindset. But at the same time the main character reacts to it in a way that I found refreshing. While she runs forth to do her own protecting she'll do so recklessly and while other heroines find this to work out for them, Jayne faces real consequences that put other people in danger for her actions. In short the main character is the saving grace in this book for me. The story, while interesting, hasn't completely reeled me in, although it was a good read. And I haven't completely decided if its just following a popular build for YA novels.
