About book The Curse Of The Gatekeeper (2007)

I liked this in that it invokes feelings of reminiscence for the old HP gang. I did not enjoy this book as an extension of the series, per se. On its own, it's fine, but I wouldn't read it were it not for being a huge fan of Rowling's storlyine and characters. This books strays from her formula for those characters (ie He Who Must Not Be Named actually planning and chatting w/Lucius and Bellatrix...just not realistic). Also, James is a difficult character to follow...he seems all over the place and not just because he's a pre-teen. I'll continue reading the series. Definitely appreciate Lippert's effort with this fan fiction series. This just wasn't a book that drew me in. After a thousand years, Merlinus Ambrosius is back in the world. Convinced to stay in the world and on the side of good, Merlin became the new headmaster of Hogwarts, but Merlin is not the only thing that came through on the night of Elders Crossing. A dark and unknowable force from the void between the worlds has turned its deadly gaze towards Earth. The Gatekeeper is coming and it’s not going to stop until everything is dead.I liked this book, it was readable and well written, but there were several things that just bugged me. I know this is fanfiction, but still, after how well the first book was handled, I was expecting a bit more. The author did manage to make the Epilogue chapter of the canon series work though, so that’s a plus. The entire concept of the Gatekeeper wasn’t handled as well as it could have been. The whole book focused on how it was a creature that was utterly alien and wouldn’t even know other realms existed before the events of this book, and yet everyone seems to know a lot about it and what it’ll do once it learns of other lifeforms. I’d like to know where everyone was getting their information from, I can imagine a few things but none of them satisfactory. It wouldn’t be so bad, but the ending contradicts much of what was established purely for the sake of tying it off neatly. The ending works, but it does wind up feeling a bit too convenient. The mystery of the Bloodline was handled pretty well, but it was seriously telegraphed who the person was. To the point that I wanted to yell at the characters for not noticing. The only one even doing things half the time and the main character fixates on somebody else. Did get a bit frustrating after a while. Although there were some nice zigs and zags along the way.Added to the top of that is Muggle prejudice being back in full force. Muggles never invented anything, everything they ever did was because the Wizards did it first. Children’s tales and nursery rhymes are the result of Wizard culture leaking out. And photography was invented by Wizards to pass the time. After the way modern electronics were used in Book 1, I was a bit surprised that the author suddenly reverted to all non-magical people are worthless.Problems and annoyances aside, this is actually a pretty solid book and should be of interest to fans of the first book and Harry Potter fans in general.Look forward to reading Book 3."Then I am the King of the Cats,"
