About book The Curse Of The Good Girl: Raising Authentic Girls With Courage And Confidence (2009)

I would have preferred Simmons cite more research to back up her claims about how girls internalize certain "lessons" about femininity, but her anecdotal evidence certainly resonated with me. This book is written for parents of preteen/teenage girls, so I know I'm not the target audience, but I was hoping for more preventative advice--how can I raise my preschool-age daughter to have an authentic voice and not fixate on being perceived as perfect? Is it even possible? The major benefit for me of reading this book was realizing that certain traits I had, which I had assumed were in born or the result of family upbringing, are actually shared across my gender, largely due to societal influences--and now that I've recognized that, I can work on changing them. This book might not provide me with the tools to do that, but at least it got me thinking in the right direction. I did not read the entire book. More scanned it. I felt as though it had some very good points and could see how I was raise to be the"good girl" and how I was raising my daughter to follow the same "good girl" ways. The book helped me to see that being a "good girl" was not really what I was wanting for my daughter. At least the way this book portrayed the "good girl". I want her to be strong with confidence not meek and mild letting others walk all over her. I gave it a three star only because I did not read the entire book, but I did like the pieces I did pick up.
