About book The Dark Flight Down (2004)

Sequel to The Book of Dead Days.Boy has survived the terrors of life with the magician Valerian, dark magic and deadly chases, but he is still on the run. Now, as the City lies frozen in the icy claws of winter, he is captured and incarcerated in the Emperor Frederick's palace. Boy is transported to a world of gilded finery and splendor beyond his wildest imaging. But this world is full of madness and cruelty, closely guarded secrets and terrifying revelations. . . . There Boy and Willow must outwit the scheming of his courtiers evade the tricks of necromancers and finally, follow a trail of blood that will lead to the grisly Phantom. And reveal the mystery of Boy's birth and life.(book jacket)I really like Sedgwick's writing; few authors surprise me with plot points and the combination of his quirky imagination, strong characters, dark-but not too dark development, and spot-on language and voice are nearly unique in YA lit.

Do You like book The Dark Flight Down (2004)?

Marqus Sedgwick's "The Dark Flight Down," continues the story of Boy and his friend Willow and a new journey with the scientist Kepler. Boy runs an errand for Kepler and ends up incarcerated in the dungeon of the Emperor Frederick's palace. In this thrilling conclusion to the story of Boy there are many thrills and mysteries to be solved as the gruesome Phantom attacks and Maxim, who serves as the Emperor's closest advisor, tries to use Boy to find the Book to use to serve his own purposes. A great story filled with enough macabre maddness to keep you reading till the end.

I definitely enjoyed this (the second book) more than The Dead Days. Although the writing style seemed more directed towards a younger audience, I still found the book to be quite interesting. Unlike the firs book, I was actually curious as to what was going to happen next. I think that most of my interest in the book came from the fact that there were a lot of unanswered questions in the first book which were thankfully all addressed in "The Dark Flight Down". Like the first book i found the ending to be too convenient, I was expecting something else, something a little more realistic. Instead, in the last fifty odd pages they introduce completely new concepts which just so happen to conveniently tie up all the lose ends of the story; not my ideal ending. So if you are a young reader who enjoyed the first book, you won't be disappointed by this, it's sequel, otherwise, I would steer clear of the series.

This book was a very interesting read with an original plot. However I expected something which wasn't there...The PlotThis book does not contain as much action, suspense and 'darkness' as much as The Book of Dead Days, which I expected and certainly would have loved. On the other hand, it does contain a higher level of mystery than the first book. I didn't expect this book to have this sort of plot since the dark days aren't part of the story. They were a crucial part of the first book so it's obvious that readers would expect the author to continue building up on this theme, however, he did not... and that left me thirsty for more dark days stuff...Anyway, the plot kept taking unexpected turns therefore it kept surprising me till the very end, and I love that! (view spoiler)[SIDENOTE:I thought that Kepler was Boy's father... epic fail!!(*Did you think so too??) (hide spoiler)]
