About book The Etymologicon: A Circular Stroll Through The Hidden Connections Of The English Language (2011)

I've always loved the stories behind where our words come from. The author is clever, contemporary and has a funny wit. The topic was right up my alley, and lead me in several directions, learning about the various peoples this book enlightened me about. I consider it very light reading and written in small chunks, so it's an easy book to pick up and put down in short amounts of time, yet ponder for quite a while after you've set it down. Loved it, plain and simple. Really, really interesting. I kept getting excited and reading chapters to random family members, and highlighting and bookmarking all over. It also did a really good job of making the subject matter amusing. I love language and history so it's great. The only thing is it took me a while (a week) to get through while reading other things, but you really can't fault nonfiction for not being a one sitting kind of read. I'm just not used to it. I'll definitely recommend to my dad because he loves origins of the English language and adores history.
