About book The Evolution Of Calpurnia Tate (2009)

Callie V lives during the turn of the century in Texas. She follows in the steps of her grandfather and Charles Darwin. She has to know everything about the workings of the world around her. However, her scientific goals do not align with the goals of her mother and being a lady. Callie has a rough time fusing what she wants with what is expected of her. I found the narrative boring. However, a scientific minded child may find this novel fascinating. The language is high level and compelling, just not enough to keep me interested. This is a very good book. It is also very nice to have a strong female character. I love how as Calpurnia leans more about science and evolution from her grandfather she gets more rebellious about her expectations for being a girl (this was 1899). She even starts to slowly cut off her hair which I think is awesome. I love how she is just terrible at the jobs that women are supposed to do, but she excels in science. It's cool how Calpurnia is constantly thinking about science. She doesn't listen to her mom lecturing her about how she needs to care about her boring female jobs like cooking and sewing and uses her mind to think about productive things instead. The one problem with this book is that sometimes it is a little slow, but other than that, I would recommend this to any historical fiction lover.
