About book The Girlfriend (2000)

I enjoyed the hell out of this book. After zooming through The Boss, I immediately opened this book on my Kindle and promptly read it. I began to invest in the characters, and think that by far, the strongest part of this installment in the series was Sophie's journey through Neil's treatments for leukemia. It became a book about a real relationship in this novel. They face difficult choices and decisions and the author acknowledges how each person is changed forever, for better and worse, by the events and how they choose to handle them. I was also enamored of the way the author depicted the couple's communication issues and how they committed to move past the bulk of those difficulties. At parts, there were issues that were revisited enough that, if Sophie, Neil or one of the secondary characters were a flesh and blood friend of mine, I would shake them by the shoulders and say, "OH MY GOD NO ONE CARES." I actually think this is, ironically, due to the author's ability to write relationships so well. She fleshes out the interactions and the issues that happen in a way that they are easily integrated by the reader, but after doing that well a few times, I wanted some resolution, some movement forward. Not too many, and certainly not enough that it kept me from enjoying the book, certainly! Well done, Jenny Trout! Quite possibly an even better read than the first book in the series "The Boss", and that was pretty awesome to begin with. I could barely put this down! Once again the characters are utterly likable and real, as is the perfectly conceivable storyline which is both engaging and heartbreaking. It makes the smoking hot sex scenes that much more erotic and intense! I will be reading the rest of this series like a crazed fangirl now as I simply MUST know what happens to Sophie and Neil! I cannot recommend this series enough (to those who are down with some HAWT kinky fuckery laced with an engaging story and charming characters!)
