About book The Highlander's Heart (2011)

Had some interesting moments, with generally good writing, but I couldn't get fully invested in the characters, and the subplots were distracting. I skimmed through half of the book. Character-wise, i found Isabelle rather frustrating with her repeated attempts at escape without thinking things through. Campbell was amiable and amusing, but not at all arresting. I did like some of the secondary characters. Overall, the author seems promising; I would keep an eye out for future books. I liked both Isabelle and David. They eased into their affection with each other, in fact, their union is not consummated until near the end, after they marry, since he honors her married state. The force of their attraction did not come through for me. I found it comfortable and indeed neither character is overly passionate. I enjoyed the story but in addition to the lack of passion between the two, there were too many sub-plots. I liked Cait and Andrews mini story plus there is Alys and Archie plus the bishop plus Simon (he's the bad guy) plus plus plus. I happen to know the minstrel is the hero of the next book since I read that one first. There are very funny lines throughout which I enjoyed. Isabelle, especially, who seem to have the worst luck, so much so that she's given up on praying to God for help because his answer is always "no". She keeps a good sense of humor throughout which was refreshing. My favorite is after she has tried to escape in a pickle barrel and she is rescued once again by David. She's sitting in muck(manure)and looks up to him:"Good day Laird Campbell. It seems my plans have gone a bit awry." (Not for the first time) She then asks:""Will you teach me some curses?" She had the small satisfaction of seeing his smile fade and confusion fill his eyes. "I beg yer pardon?" "I haven't the good fortune to know any curses and this seems an ideal time to express one.""So, I liked it but I doubt I'll read it again.
