We are told at the very beginning that this is not a comprehensive guide to microfinance, but that this is one man's journey through the impoverished, sometimes war-torn, countries, cities, towns, villages, land, and seeing how just a small loan can make a huge difference. This story never makes you feel like he is selling the idea of microfinance, or Kiva, rather you see what he sees, and what he sees is eye-opening, sometimes heartbreaking, but also beautiful and courageous and optimistic. Fantastic read. Highly recommended!! Bob Harris is one of my all-time favorite Jeopardy contestants. He has always struck me as a nice man, a perception proven by this book. He has great compassion for others and is very generous in his giving. Plus he shares self-deprecating tales of his travel adventures. Mr. Harris tells both the business and human sides of micro-lending and how it works in many countries. I appreciate Mr. Harris’s introduction to the people who have benefited from these small loans; their stories demonstrate the power of persistence and hard work, and the sheer will to survive. This is an off-the-beaten-track travelogue that will surely inspire readers.
