About book The Me I Want To Be Becoming God's Best Version Of You By Ortberg, John Dec-04-2009 Paperback (2009)

Great little book that loses its way at times with so many of this preachers stories and illustrations. Sometimes it can be superficial theologically and spiritually (he's no Dallas Willard) but he is very accessible and honest, and so I am really challenged by his fundamental point about we either flourish or languish and it is all dependent about whether we get the roots of our life into the flow of the river of the Spirit. This is a good emphasis rather than just coming up with a list of spiritual disciplines. He really does emphasise that it is a work of the Spirit but that there are things that we can do or fail to do that get us in the flow of the Spirit, or not. I also love his emphasis on looking at the whole of life and not just the obvious devotional practices, and of acknowledging how personality type has some influence on the ways we do things. Not great theology or spirituality, but a good, helpful encouraging book. I have read this book twice as part of Bible studies. The first time through, I was in a New Believer / Seeker group. The second time was part of a larger women's group study.John Ortberg's writing style is funny, which I appreciate. The content could have more substance and the motorcycle imagery didn't translate all that well to an all-women large group study. If I were evaluating solely based on my first time through, I would have rated the book higher. (Especially if targeting an audience of New Believers)
