About book The Night Before (2003)

Good idea, but it just kept going and going and going and going, Someone is knocking off members of the wealthy Montgomery family in Savannah. The Montgomery family is surrounded by controversy and suspicions including, adultery, mental illness, accidental death, incest, & lust. All are discussed, acted upon or realized by a variety of unlikeable characters.Caitlyn Montgomery is the prime murder suspect after her slime of a husband is found dead and she wakes up covered in blood. She constantly convinces herself it was...perhaps... a bad nosebleed? Seriously? After a long while I realized Caitlyn had a serious mental problem that neither the detectives nor her remaining family members ever realized. If I could figure it out, couldn't they? It was obvious and they where there. The detectives had so much promise in the beginning, but didn't have a clue and one was more concerned with her inability to stop using swear words. The romantic part of this "romantic suspense" was not romantic at all. It was kind of creepy and it was definitely unethical. I felt zero chemistry between the two and it felt forced, like it had to fit. I thought there was no way a reasonable man would be in love with this woman and follow through with a relationship without serious repercussions to his career.I admit I was surprised to find out who psychopath was, but the motive for the killings was such a letdown. It took years to commit murder after murder to reach the silly motive. The psychopath had the motive and would have received the motive without killing. It was amazing how not one person over the years questioned the deaths. They were simply natural or accidental, aka "The Montgomery Curse". How this killer killed two victims was really ridiculous (sugar, Def Leppard & insects). This story seemed to never end. After the big finale and the killer is revealed the book kept going and going and going and going and going and going...The best character: Oscar the dog.

I'm struggling not to write how bad this book was because the fact is I could not stop listening to it. It didn't matter that it contained every single mystery/suspense cliche since the beginning of suspenseful novels. There's a twin, there's a history of insanity, there's that old southern gothic favorite, the mention of ghosts(no real ghosts though, they are metaphorical), there's the tortured heroine, there's your troubled hunky cop, there's the mysterious hunky psychologist, there's the wisecracking woman cop, there's incest, there's the haunting loss of a child, there's the whoremonger dad, etc. There were a lot of characters and two other mysteries that are woven into this one. There's a lot going on but as awful as I want to say this book was, I had to keep listening, had to see how it ended so in all honesty it was a compelling read.A huge complaint, the story is set in Georgia, the main character, raised in Georgia, orders an iced tea with sugar. No born and raised southerner would order it any way but as a sweet tea. This oversight bugged me beyond the formulaic story.

Do You like book The Night Before (2003)?

Good plot about a tormented rich family with a number of psychologically disturbed characters; including some illegitimate child'ren who want to share in the family heritage. One by one they are murdered in cruel ways by a ruthless killer who enjoys watching their fear just before they are killed. The tension is gradually built up. Towards the end, the pieces of the puzzle fit together. But the story could have been written in 25 % less pages, as the historical facts and backgrounds are too often repeated.
