About book The Secret Of The Mansion (2003)

This was such a fun sweet book! And it reminded me of one of my fave series as a child, The Happy Hollisters! Oh, how I devoured their adventures!A perfect summer read and even if it'll be a bit of a different read for younger kids these days, given how old timey it can read at times, it was full of charm and reminded me a lot of both very loved books I read when I was Trixie's age and also of the summers of my childhood, that I also spent under very little supervision, safely roaming and playing around in a small village, far from the rest-of-the-year-life-in-the-city!Trixie was both an endearing and irritating character at the same time, because she was sweet and enthusiastic but could also be a bit too quick to judge and rather prone to act first and think later! Often rash and always determined she was also a very honest and open girl that was the best kind of influence for the very city girl and sheltered Honey (also, that name?). They both form a team that keeps each other on balance and once they find a very unexpected friend that they want to help and a mysterious inheritance to find. I was expecting a lil bit more of the house mystery but I wasn't really disappointed because the book was full of summer goodness and the mystery was just another part of it!3.5 stars to this one and I'm curious to give a try to more books in the series, if I can get my hands on them!

Teenaged Trixie Belden's boring summer takes an interesting turn when Honey, a girl her age, moves into the mansion next door. They become fast friends and come to the aid of a runaway boy, Jim, who is in search of his great-uncle, an elderly miser who was recently hospitalized. This book is chock full of interesting characters and fast-paced action. I did not start reading the series at the beginning when I was a kid; I started with my now beloved number 14. I've always said that if I'd started the series with this book that I likely would not have continued onto book two. I think that's primarily because of some animal issues and the fact that Trixie seems a little bratty in the beginning. Fortunately, her attitude improves somewhat as the book progresses. And, honestly, Jim wasn't a favorite from the beginning, but I can certainly understand how his previous life circumstances caused him to act as he did. Although this book has some resolution at the end, it also has a cliff-hanger (the only book in the series that I can remember doing so); books one and two should definitely be read together. Overall, this was the book that started the series that immediately became my all-time favorite children series. I'm hoping my nephew becomes a fan of it as well.

June 13, 2013: Re-reading the first three in the series again. A summer tradition! :)August 9, 2012: Just another summer re-read. Partly because I'm trying to get back on pace with my reading goal (I have three YA books on hold at the library to pick up this weekend) and partly because I just love this series and the first three are awesome books to read in the summer! :)A great start to a wonderful series that is still making an impact in my life. Even the bad books are good because they're there (and I enjoy mocking them *g*). But this book gets everything off to a great start. How could I not have fallen in love with a series whose opening line is, "Oh, Moms, I'll just die if I don't have a horse!" Although I read and enjoyed Nancy Drew, it was so much easier to relate to Trixie, who loved horses, had annoying brothers, hated dusting, and didn't do well in math. But more than anything, the friendships in this series is what drew me to it, and has held me to it, 30-some years later.

Back in the day, I was obsessed with Trixie. I know I read all the books multiple times and imagined being a part of the Bob Whites. I recently discovered my 1988 library summer reading log, and I think all the Trixies were on it. From a nostalgia perspective, this is definitely a 5 star series. As an adult, it doesn't hold up quite as well as some of my other childhood favorites. But here are a few things I noticed on this reread: the immense medical detail and random accidents--malnourishment, copperheads, horse-riding accidents, oh my!Had completely forgotten the "poor little rich girl" part of Honey. What a sad, sad story. All the gardening! And the heat. But maybe that's my own current summer mentality.First read: summer 1988

I decided to read this book, because ever since i was younger i had always tried to fully get into reading the whole series, and only recently i got back into completing this aim i set. The adventure and mystery had always intrigued me, and Trixie was always my main role model in life.On the bingo board, it fits into the category of my own choice. It was an easy choice, with the series being an all time favorite of mine. My favorite quote from this book is 'Why Honey, i feel as though i can be anything with you!' Reading through Honey and Trixie's made me appreciate the fun i have with my friends, and to make the most of the times we spend as many of our lives can easily unravel.Something i can take away from this book is to take risks, because something beautiful might come out of it. Life can throw many scary adventures at you, and you can chose to live in fear to experience them all, or take every opportunity and make new memories. Ever since i read Trixie's first adventure i fell in love with the life and passion she had as a young child! It was fascinating to read how a country girl lived her life, making fun out of an old barn and having imaginary friends. It was a new type of fun, being an only child and living in a city. It made me open my eyes to the wonderful world around me.
