About book The Sisters Montclair (2012)

I liked the narrator in this book. I think in a lot of books, the narrator is almost meant to be the universally relatable and likeable character, which means that usually the character is pretty mild-mannered, and not overly confident or ambitious. But this narrator is unusually sharp-tongued, and it was a nice change of pace. She was also rather unmotivated in school, and didn’t seem real appreciative of her boyfriend’s financial support, so I didn’t like that too much, but I guess you can’t have it all. What I really didn’t like about this book were the last four chapters. Throughout the book, Alice and Stella both have secrets that they don’t reveal until the end, but these secrets are ridiculously easy to guess. Seriously, I’m not very good at guessing these sorts of things, but I had it all figured out. And the last chapter? Don’t expect any sort of twist or surprise ending, because what happens in the last chapter is exactly what you think would happen in the last chapter. And finally, there was this one scene between Stella and her boyfriend towards the end that really rubbed me the wrong way. Basically, she owes him money and acts like she doesn’t owe him anything. Look, I realize there’s this whole feminist moving going on, and it’s all well and good to say that a woman doesn’t owe a man sex, she doesn’t owe him to invite him into her house, all that shit. But money is different. If you owe a man money, you can’t just say “Well, I did this for you, so we’ll call it even.” So that bugged me.It’s a good story, just not a good ending. I really enjoyed this. It surprised me. This is not my usual genre but I connected with it. I guess it kind of reminded me of my own family in some ways. The author definitely portrays relationships very explicitly and correctly. I feel alot of our older generation have been thru things we can learn from if we take the time. Several of these things are very painful but they don't diminish the person or the way we feel about them. It prepares us for the future and helps us get past the challenging and hard times of growing thru to the senior stages of life. I loved the changes that were accomplished with the caregiver. It's a good novel and a real eye opener.
