About book The Sisters Weiss (2013)

Not my favorite of her books. The plot was engrossing, but the dialogue (ironically between the two characters who speak English, and not those speaking Yiddish) was odd and stilted, which kept me from giving it three stars. My favorite book by Ragen, " The Covenant," is so good, that all of her other novels just pale in comparison. I probably would have given this more than two, less than three stars if that feature was available. As with many historical novels, there is a modern-day storyline as well as a flashback. And as is often the case, I fully enjoyed the historical section but not so much the other. The first section of the book just flowed so much more naturally and I cared much more about the characters. However regardless of any weaknesses in the writing, the book overall was a fascinating look into the inner workings of a conservative Jewish community in New York, and the ways that family relationships and conflicts play out within that context. I thought the author dealt very sensitively with Orthodox Jewish culture. She showed the stringent roles that can feel stifling, but also the rich spirituality and feeling of support and security that exists within the community.
