About book The Vampires Of Manhattan (2014)

I read all of the Blue Blood series and wanted to see what they would do with a reboot for adults. For me, the book read exactly like the original Blue Bloods novels. As a matter of fact, it was jarring when Mimi (Force) Martin started whining about how she was getting old and less attractive at 26 than she was a decade before. The story was still relatively entertaining, but the writing was a teen-ish as ever. There was a cliffhanger than had me mildly interested, but I am not sure that I need any more Blue Bloods. 3.5 starsVampires of Manhattan is my first book by Melissa De La Cruz and is new spin-off series from her previous Blue Blood series, where the characters have "grown-up." I haven't read anything from the Blue Blood series, so the characters were all new to me and while it did take me a few chapters to get into the book, I still enjoyed it. Thus, you don't have to have read the series to enjoy the book. but I imagine it will be even more memorable to those who knew the characters from years previously in their youth. This first book sets the stage for the new series and while as the synopsis states, centers around Oliver, who is now the heat of the Blue Bloods Coven. While the story focuses on Oliver and his love/familiar Finn, it also follows two other sets of characters simultaneously, Kingsley and Mimi, as well as Edon and Ara, with the chapters rotating between what was going on between the three sets of characters while simultaneously connecting everything that was happening together as a whole. There has been 10 years of peace since the war, when a conspiracy that involves murder and betrayal is set in motion resulting in everything that has been achieved since the war crumbling. While, as I said above, it did take me several chapters to figure out what was going on, once I did, I enjoyed seeing where the author was taking the characters and the story, as well as how she brought them all together in the end, setting the stage for the series to progress. I would consider this an adult novel, as the characters seemed too old for this to be considered new adult. Of the three sets of characters the book focused on, though there were other secondary characters that played important roles, I think my favorites were Edon and Ara, and I hope the author takes their relationship and what seems to be budding romance further in the subsequent novels. Overall, this was an enjoyable book and a promising beginning to this series, though you do have to pay close attention to what is going on in order to understand it and do plan on reading and/or listening to subsequent installments in the series.
