About book Too Far (2010)

Mesmerising. Finished this book in two sittings. Two six year old children, playing in the forest and falling in love, the only way two children can. Rich can write so vividly and keep such an innocent feel to both these characters. I found the book nostalgic, often bringing me back to how adventurous life can be as a child and all the wonders you find, that seem hard to find when one grows up. Full of beautiful imagery and symbolic events. I was especially fond of the way he named parts of the forest and included a map at the back of the book so you could track their little adventures with them. I was first intrigued by this book's magical premise. Then I was intrigued by the conflicting reviews people had given it. So, unable to resist, I had to read it myself.I want to feel bad about the 2 star review, but that's just what it is. This books tries to be magical and exciting, but it just doesn't have any impact. There just isn't enough detail or intrigue to keep me satisfied. The parts in the forest just seemed convoluted, and the most exciting parts were the ones about their home lives. The ending seemed too abrupt, didn't make much sense, and was a bit of a downer. Ah well, live and learn.
